If you can’t defend yourself on the ground then you DON’T know how to truly defend yourself. That’s where we come in.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a complete fighting system that will teach you how to control and subdue your opponent. You will learn not only how to immobilize attackers effectively so they can’t attack you but also how to defeat them humanely. It’s the only PROVEN style where a smaller person can immobilize and defeat a stronger larger attacker.
Let’s take a quick look at the current UFC Champions as of November 2011…
These days EVERYONE has Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Grappling class, regardless of whether the instructor is qualified to teach. I personally know at least one of our former students (a White Belt) that would strap on a Black Belt at his Tae Kwon Do school and teach “grappling” classes there to his naive unsuspecting students. Unlike a profession like law, medicine, plumbing, etc. that has a set certification, the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a free-for-all, allowing charlatans and fakers to prey on potential martial arts students.
But there is a solution…as the old saying goes, “the Proof is in the Pudding!”
Any legitimate instructor or program should have good students, right?!?
In 2010, Team Lloyd Irvin made history… becoming the only Non-Brazilian team to make it into the Overall Standings at the IBJJF World Championships. This is not local NAGAs or Grapplers Quest that put “World Championship” into their tournament names but the REAL World Championships of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The caption above is fact… Team Lloyd Irvin has produced more World and Grand Slam Medals than every other Maryland school combined and Crazy 88 has produced more World and Grand Slam Medals than every other Baltimore area school combined.
Don’t take our word for it, see the results for yourself (please make sure you look through the list, you’ll discover that reality and hype are two different things. You’ll see where a lot “big name” teams stack up)…

You can see the results of our teaching and program design – champion after champion produced from the widest range of different people. We have produced men, women, juvenile, adult, and seniors Medalists at the highest level of competition at tournaments from Europe to Brazil to everywhere in America. If you want to be the best that you can be at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you owe it to yourself to give us a call (443) 283-1450.
Many people think because we have one of the Best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition Teams in the World that everything that we do is geared towards competition and everyone in our school is a Competitor. NOT TRUE!
Most of our students begin training with ZERO martial arts, ZERO wrestling, ZERO judo, ZERO boxing, and ZERO combative sports experience. We take special pride in the fact that our world-renown competition team was completely home-grown and does not consist solely of collegiate-level wrestlers. If you want to compete, we have the systems in place to make you a champion – all you need to bring is the desire and the ability to work hard.
If you don’t want to compete, that is fine too (90% of our students do NOT compete at all.)
In the midst of my medical residency, regularly working 100 hours a week, people would ask me how I could afford to take the time to train BJJ.
My answer is, believe it or not, that I can’t afford not to. Training increasing amounts at Crazy88 over the past year, my conditioning and strength have improved so much that it’s actually much easier to endure being up running around the hospital for 30 hours straight taking care of patients with no sleep. I’ve lost 20 pounds and am in the best shape of my life. My mental and physical discipline have soared, as well, which has become invaluable for me both inside and outside of work.
But, besides that, Crazy88BJJ has given me so much more. The training is literally world-class and the instructors and students are passionate about the sport that I’ve come to love as well. They’re often willing to take extra time outside of class to drill with me, sharpen my technique, or run me through a circuit. In addition, though the instructors are world champions themselves, the school still brings us other internationally-accomplished practitioners to teach us. Julius Park is not only a dedicated teacher but he is fantastic at running this school, evidenced by how it has grown (exploded) in so many ways over the past few years.
In sum, Crazy88BJJ is THE place to train if you are serious about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the Baltimore/Columbia area. No other school has produced what this school is producing. Actually, we are going to have to get another medal display soon, I think, because ours is just about full!

The biggest fear for most people like yourself who are considering getting started with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training is that they are not ready. This fear is
For years, most Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools have been throwing beginner students to the wolves the first week they have started training. Your orientation to Jiu Jitsu is getting your butt kicked by the more advanced students – the argument being that the TOUGH guys would make it through! You had better be in shape before you attend most schools or else you’re going to be in for a rough night!
You do not need to be in-shape. We have a specialized program structure that will build you up and get you in fighting shape.
You do not need to have previous Grappling experience. No Judo, No Wrestling, No Jiu-Jitsu Necessary. We are not going to throw you to the wolves. We are going to build your martial arts foundation using our Fundamentals and Intermediate curriculum – the same way we built up our professional fight team (we are very proud of our ability to turn “average” people into Jiu Jitsu monsters!).
One dirty little secret that no one at these schools tells you is that you’re going to learn whatever the instructor *feels* like teaching that day. In all forms of education, educators have very detailed finely-tuned curriculums to guarantee that a student learns the required material. Could you imagine a college professor teaching whatever popped into his mind that day? Unfortunately, this is the way most Jiu Jitsu academies operate.
Fortunately for you, I have the solution and it’s one of the reasons our students are so happy.
We have developed a Core Curriculum for our White Belt Fundamentals classes. These sessions are taught in a friendly, social, and laid-back atmosphere that is 100% geared to teaching our new students our core basic requirements at our school.
Many people think because we have one of the Best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition Teams in the World that everything that we do is geared towards competition and everyone in our school is a Competitor.
That is completely wrong.
In the very beginning, I personally believe that students need to focus heavily on learning their technique instead of trying to learn how to survive in heated sparring matches when they don’t know any technique yet. Many people begin training out-of-shape and they wouldn’t be able to complete a full blown competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class.
That is why we offer over 15 Jiu Jitsu Fundamentals Classes Per Week – almost HALF of all our classes are geared towards the pure beginner! That’s 60 classes per month 100% geared to the pure beginner.
…and the best part about it is that the students taking these Fundamentals Classes are learning the exact same techniques and our exclusive training systems that our Champions are learning.
If you’re a beginner to Jiu Jitsu I must warn you about a few things – You should know that not all schools are created equal and it is very important that you make an educated decision before picking a school.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the UFC and other Mixed Martial Arts events, everyone and their brother is re-labeling their schools as “MMA” or “Grappling” schools. As an experiment, go into last year’s phone book and see how many Karate schools have become “Mixed Martial Arts” schools. My point is: You have to be selective when choosing a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school.
In fact, you should NEVER join a school or BJJ program unless it meets ALL the following FIVE criteria:
Of course, it’s a given that the school should be clean and well-maintained, and the staff, courteous and professional. You need to take advantage of the 30 Day Free Trial and experience the proven system of Crazy 88. You will get into the best shape of your life, learn the world’s most effective grappling style from America’s #1 team, all while having more fun that you could think you could have at a martial arts school.
