TLI’s Brandon Vera has a War with Shogun

This past weekend while our Jiu-Jitsu competition squad was in New Jersey, another Team Lloyd Irvin member was fighting in the main event of UFC On Fox 5.

Brandon “The Truth” Vera took on Mauricio Shogun Rua. This was a title contender fight and many critics believed that Vera was not deserving of this opportunity. Vera was on a two fight losing streak as well as one no-contest while Shogun was coming off of a Fight of the Year against Dan Henderson. In the first round, Shogun took down Vera and began to attack with ground and pound. After standing up Shogun was able to land shots on the feet ending the first round. However, coming out into the second round Vera was able to land his combinations as well as taking down Shogun at the end of the round and landing some ground and pound of his own. By the third round both men were exhausted, but Vera pressed on repeatedly finding a home for his combinations even bloodying up Shogun with some well timed elbows. In the fourth round, Shogun finally managed to land a hard one-two combination and manages to swarm Vera for the TKO.

Although our teammate lost the fight, it was an inspiring display of guts and technique and it proved to the world that Brandon deserved to have this opportunity.  Great job to Brandon for his amazing performance and persistence and congratulations to Shogun on his victory!

Brandon Vera represented Team Lloyd Irvin to its fullest, battling with former Pride and UFC Champion, Shogun Rua!
