Team Lloyd Irvin Purple Belt Rookies shine at the South Bay Open

This past weekend three of our top Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors: Keith Cebula, Tye Ryan Murphy, and Tim Spriggs flew from Baltimore MD to Los Angeles to compete in their first competition at purple belt, the South Bay Open. Crazy 88’s newest purple belts did not disappoint with an overall record of 7-1 for the day and brought back two Gold and one Bronze medal.

Keith Cebula made his purple belt debut at lightweight and dominated his way to 1st place. “Trainspotting”, as Keith is called, won both his matches 7-0 and 11-0 giving who he fought no hope.

Tye Ryan Murphy had a successful run at middleweight, earning himself a bronze medal. Tye had tough matches that day with some seasoned competitors. Tye Ryan put a exclamation point on his day by slapping on a triangle armbar in the 3rd place match, instead of submitting, his opponent decided to take a trip to the doctors with a snapped elbow.

To finish the day, Tim “#1 Stunna” Spriggs made not only his debut at purple belt but also as a heavyweight. “Stunna” did well, not conceding a point the whole tournament and submitting his opponent in the finals with a cross choke from mount. Keith, Tye, and Tim had an relaxing and fulfilling time in L.A. and are excited to get back on the mats to train and test their skills very soon.
